The Relationship between Muscles, Back Pain and Exercise —
An Interview with Norman J. Marcus, MD, DABPM
The most common pain problem for which medical advice is sought is back pain. Dr. Marcus believes that muscles are actually the most common reason for pains in the back but says a thorough examination of muscles is rarely, if ever, done. Dr. Marcus has enhanced the techniques to evaluate and treat muscle and ligament pain taught to him by the late Hans Kraus MD, father of sports medicine, physician to President John F. The National Pain Foundation Welcomes a New President/CEO
Mark B. Rasmussen recently was hired as president and chief executive officer of the National Pain Foundation in February 2007. Before joining the NPF, Mark spent several years as a consultant working with clients who were primarily in the nonprofit arena. His focus was in helping nonprofits to adapt "best practices" from the corporate world to increase their efficiency and effectiveness. Click here to read more.

Participate in an Online Pain Study
Elizabeth Peck, a master's candidate in nursing at DePaul University in Chicago, is conducting a study on pain for her thesis. She is seeking study participants to answer questions regarding their pain. Study participants must be over age 18 and have had a chronic pain condition treated by a health care professional. UCLA Knee Arthritis Education Project Seeks Participants
If you are at least 55 years old with moderate to severe knee arthritis in the Los Angeles area, UCLA is interested in your opinion about an educational video. This study requires a one-time visit during which participants will watch an educational video and discuss the video in a group setting. FDA Requests Label Change for All Sleep Disorder Drug Products
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has requested that all manufacturers of sedative-hypnotic drug products, a class of drugs used to help people fall asleep or stay asleep, strengthen their product labeling to include stronger language concerning potential risks. Companies Ordered to Stop Manufacturing and Selling Unapproved Illegal Ergotamine Drugs to Treat Migraine Headaches
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) told 20 companies to cease marketing unapproved drug products containing ergotamine tartrate. Ergotamine tartrate products are used to treat vascular headaches, including migraines. Read more about this important issue.

New Survey Finds Rise in Chronic Pain Among U.S. Workers in Past 10 Years
According to a new survey, persistent chronic pain has increased nearly 40% among U.S. workers in the past 10 years. In 2006, nearly one in three (26%) employees who have pain reported that their pain is chronic, whereas in 1996, only 19% of employees reported chronic pain.
