Getting Help

The good news for people with headaches is that a number of resources exist to help you find out more about headaches and headache treatment options. Shop around — get multiple consultations — until you are completely satisfied that the health-care practitioner or facility can help you with your headaches. Some questions to ask your provider:

1.       Do you specialize in headache treatment? (If so) Are you a certified headache specialist? (If not) How many headache patients do you treat a week?

2.       What is your philosophy of approach to headache management?  Does it include in terms of medications and and alternative therapies?

3.       What types of medications do you generally prescribe?

4.       What types of non-drug therapies do you use?

5.       Where do you refer patients who need additional treatment?

Here are some places and people that help manage headaches:

Headache clinics. Staffed by practitioners who specialize in headache treatment and management, such clinics usually offer multi-modality, (various forms of therapy) treatment that is often interdisciplinary (that is, treatment coordinated by physicians, nurses, physical therapists, and behavioral specialists such as psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers.)

Comprehensive pain centers. Such centers provide multi-modality, interdisciplinary treatment, but may not have headache programs or specialists. Be sure to check first.

Pain medicine physicians. Pain medicine has become a medical specialty in recent years. Pain medicine physicians specialize in treating many different pain conditions.  Depending on background and interest, many treat headaches.  However, inquire about their experience and interest in treating headache and whether they incorporate a variety of therapeutic (multi-modality) approaches.

Chiropractors. Most headache clinics and pain centers clinics incorporate allopathic medical medicine and behavioral treatment and chiropractic treatments. Many Some now provide chiropractic and homeopathic headache treatment as well.
