Hurricane: Patient

If a hurricane is forecasted for your area and evacuation is recommended, there are important steps you should take to help ensure you receive the medications you need both during and after the disaster:
  1. Check all medications and do a pill count.
  2. Call the office to be worked in for an appointment if you have not been seen in the last week. The office will make necessary calculations and issue a 'hurricane prescription' if possible. If you need a pump refill within one week of an impending hurricane, come in for a refill.
  3. Go to your pharmacy and have your prescriptions filled.
  4. Take care of your medications and prescriptions. Place them in a safe place and in a waterproof container. Please take your medications as discussed with your physician.
Keep a legitimate form of waterproofed identification with you at all times (e.g., driver's license, passport). Especially when it comes to filling prescriptions, it is vital that you have proof of who you are!

It is important to think ahead. Clinics and pharmacies may not be open after a hurricane. If there is not enough time for you to be seen by the office or to refill your prescriptions, and/or you are on an extended release narcotic, call the office for instructions on how to taper.

Please pace yourselves as you prepare for the hurricane, to think clearly about what you need and ONLY take necessary items, and to move carefully using good body mechanics to avoid any further injury or aggravation of you pain levels.
