Diagnosis
There are no specific tests to diagnose trigeminal neuralgia (TN). In fact, your health care provider may be able to diagnose your TN by asking questions about your pain. He or she may ask where the pain occurs, how long it lasts, what it feels like, what triggers the pain and more. During an exam, your health care provider will touch different areas of your face and gently check the areas where you are having pain.
Your health care provider may order an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) to look for the underlying cause of your facial pain. An MRI may help find or “rule out” problems that could be causing your pain, such as multiple sclerosis, tumors and aneurysms.
