Injections
You may have injections (shots) if medications do not relieve enough of your pain or if you cannot tolerate their side effects.
You may have injections (shots) of alcohol around one or more of the trigeminal nerve branches. These may help block abnormal pain messages that are causing your nerve pain and cause your face to feel numb. An additional side effect of an injection into the lower (mandibular) nerve branch is temporary weakness of the chewing muscles. Alcohol injections can offer pain relief up to six to nine months or longer. These injections can be repeated when your pain returns.
