Myths

Myth: TMJ problems are caused by a “bad bite.”
Fact:
No matter what bite you have, you have about the same chance of having TMD. There are a few exceptions your doctors can discuss with you.

Myth: Fixing a “bad bite” is necessary to treat TMD.
Fact:
Since a “bad bite” is usually not the cause of TMD, fixing it is not necessary to treat the problem.

Myth: Oral surgery is necessary to treat most TMD problems.
Fact:
Surgery is rarely needed. Most tempormandibular joints heal well with reversible treatment.

Myth: All splints are the same.
Fact:
Intraoral appliances (splints, orthotics) can come in a variety of designs. The choice of appliance should be based on your diagnosis and comfort. Splints designed by a dentist and made specifically for you are preferred for treatment rather than over-the-counter splints. Commercial products such as soft splints, the “NTI” and “Best Bite” can be useful but have serious drawbacks if used without supervision by a TMD expert.
